Elmore County Jail is operated by the Elmore County Sheriff's Office at 8955 U.S. Highway 231 in Wetumpka. The sheriff's jail page says the jail houses municipal inmates, county inmates, and people waiting to be transferred to ADOC. That mix matters because a person can be released from the jail in several different ways: bond, time served, a court order, dismissal or other disposition, transfer to ADOC, transfer to another county, or release to another agency hold.

A jail release does not always mean the person returned to the community. A transfer to ADOC is a release from county custody but continued state custody. A release to ICE, USMS, or another county also means the next custodian must be checked. For a named-person search, start with the county jail record, then use the court case, ADOC, or federal and immigration systems only when the release reason points there.

How to Confirm a Jail Release

The sheriff site has an inmate roster path and homepage modules labeled for inmate booking and inmate release, but the research found those modules offline for maintenance on July 12, 2026. Absence from the online roster should not be treated as proof that a person was released. It may mean the module is down, the person rolled off a recent-release view, the name was entered differently, or the person was transferred.

1. Check the sheriff home page and inmate roster page for the current module status.
2. Call the jail at 334-567-5441 and ask whether the person is currently in custody or whether a specific booking has been released.
3. Ask whether the release was to the community, to ADOC, to another county, or to another agency hold.
4. Check Elmore County Circuit or District Court records for the bond order, disposition, sentence, probation order, or dismissal that explains the release.
5. Use the sheriff records request form if you need the booking sheet, release date and time, release reason, or booking photograph.

The Elmore County released inmate search path should keep those systems separate. A person still in the jail belongs in the sheriff custody path. A person transferred to an Alabama prison belongs in the ADOC path. A person released to supervision belongs in the ABPP path.

Useful fields include full name, date of birth if known, booking number if known, arresting agency, booking date and time, release date and time, charges at booking, bond amount, court case number, release type, hold or detainer status, and transfer destination if there was a transfer. The sheriff records form also identifies photographs as available on photo CD for $2 plus mailing cost, with payment required before release of records.

About Elmore County Jail

This is the county jail for local detention in Elmore County. It is not the same as Elmore Correctional Facility, Staton Correctional Facility, Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women, Frank Lee Community-Based Facility, or the planned Governor Kay Ivey Correctional Complex. Those are ADOC state custody points. A person booked at the county jail may later move to ADOC, but the jail booking and the state prison record answer different questions.

The jail page states that property cannot be dropped off without prior approval. That point is release-adjacent because relatives should not assume they can exchange property at the jail window while a release is pending. The sheriff FAQ also describes work release as a privilege requiring employer paperwork, paycheck handling through jail staff, and sheriff approval. Work release is still a custody status, not a final release from jail.

Court Orders Behind Release

Many Elmore jail releases turn on the court case. The Circuit Clerk is the official record keeper for District and Circuit Court proceedings, and the Elmore County Judicial Complex is at 8935 U.S. Highway 231 N. in Wetumpka. Court records may show the bond order, initial appearance, sentence, credit for time served, probation order, dismissal, revocation action, or expungement order that explains why the jail stopped holding someone.

The sheriff FAQ gives a local example. For an FTA or FTP arrest, the person is generally held on a judge-signed writ, and the sheriff cannot approve bond. The person may need to see a judge or comply with conditions such as payment, classes, or child-support-related requirements. In that situation, the jail can confirm custody status, but the court record explains the condition that controls release.

When Release Means Transfer

Because Elmore County contains multiple ADOC facilities, transfer language should be read carefully. If the jail says the person was released to ADOC, search ADOC while the person may still be incarcerated and compare AIS number, commit county, case number, facility, custody level, sentence date, minimum release date, and parole consideration date. If the release reason points to federal or immigration custody, use the federal route instead of the county roster. BOP covers federal inmates from 1982 forward and may show release information. ICE ODLS is for current ICE custody or qualifying recent CBP custody. USMS custody is usually confirmed through federal court, the holding facility, or USMS records. A county release to another agency is not the same as release to the street.
