Federal and Immigration Releases
Federal and immigration custody is a separate release map. Do not send a reader to the Elmore sheriff roster if the person served a federal sentence in Bureau of Prisons custody, unless Elmore County Jail was only the temporary local holding facility. Do not send a reader to ADOC for an ICE detention question unless there was also an Alabama state conviction. The custody authority controls the release record.
In Elmore County, federal and immigration issues are most likely to appear as detainers, holds, or transfers from county jail. The jail release record may show that the person was released to another agency. That phrase needs follow-up because it may mean USMS, ICE, another county, or state prison rather than freedom from custody.
How to Confirm the Route
The first task is to identify which authority held the person after the county or state custody event. BOP, ICE, USMS, ADOC, and the Elmore County Sheriff's Office answer different questions and maintain different records.
- Ask the Elmore County Jail whether the release was to the community or to another agency hold.
- If the jail says federal hold or USMS, check the federal court docket and U.S. Marshals custody route.
- If the person was sentenced federally, use the BOP inmate locator for federal custody and release-date information.
- If the jail says ICE or immigration, use ICE ODLS and immigration-related contacts.
- If the jail says ADOC transfer, use Alabama Department of Corrections rather than federal systems.
- Use records requests when online locators do not answer the historical release question.
The Elmore County released inmate search works best when the custody path is classified before searching. County jail, state prison, supervision, federal custody, and immigration custody should not be merged.
Federal and Immigration Contacts
BOP locator: Federal inmates from 1982 forward
ICE ODLS: Current ICE custody or qualifying CBP custody
USMS: Federal prisoner custody records and FOIA route
County bridge: Elmore County Jail, 334-567-5441, for release-to-agency information
Court bridge: Federal court docket for federal case status
BOP locator fields commonly include name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location or released status. ICE ODLS searches use either A-number and country of birth or biographical search information such as name, country of birth, and birth date. USMS confirmation often requires federal court, the current holding facility, or a records request.
Not a Jail Facility
This page is a system route rather than a physical Elmore County jail. BOP, ICE, and USMS records may involve facilities outside Elmore County even when the person's local case or local hold started at Elmore County Jail. A county booking sheet can show the local arrest and release-to-agency event, but the next custodian controls the next custody status.
BOP Release Records
The Bureau of Prisons inmate locator covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. BOP's records information says federal inmate records can include people released after 1982. BOP also warns that release dates may change because sentences are reviewed and recalculated under the First Step Act, so a displayed release date should be checked periodically when timing matters.
If BOP shows a release date or released status, that is a federal result. It does not prove anything about the Elmore County Jail booking except that the person was in federal custody under the federal record. If the person was only temporarily housed locally for federal court, the federal docket and USMS route may be more useful than BOP.
ICE ODLS and Immigration Custody
ICE's Online Detainee Locator System is for locating people currently in ICE custody or in CBP custody for more than 48 hours. It is not a broad historical archive of old Elmore County jail releases. If a county release record says the person was released to ICE, the county record explains the local handoff while ODLS may show current immigration custody if the person is still detained.
USA.gov describes the ICE search options as A-number with country of birth or name-based information with country of birth and birth date. If no ODLS result appears, it may mean the person is not currently in ICE custody, the search details do not match, the person is outside ODLS scope, or a different authority holds the record.
U.S. Marshals Custody
USMS custody often appears when a person is arrested on federal process, held before a federal hearing, or moved as a federal prisoner. The U.S. Marshals custody information explains that after an initial hearing a federal prisoner may be released or remanded to the U.S. Marshal. USMS also has a FOIA route for prisoner custody records. For practical checking, start with federal court, then the holding facility, BOP if sentenced and designated, and USMS records when needed.
County Record Bridge
The Elmore County jail record can still matter in a federal or immigration case because it may document the local booking and release-to-agency event. Ask for the booking sheet, release date and time, release reason, hold or detainer status, and transfer destination if the person was first booked locally. That record does not prove what happened in the federal or immigration system after the handoff, but it identifies the next custodian to check.
When the county record says "released" and also shows a federal, USMS, ICE, or agency hold, avoid describing the person as free until the receiving system is checked. The correct conclusion may be released from Elmore County Jail to another authority. BOP, ICE ODLS, federal court, USMS records, or the current holding facility may be needed to finish the release confirmation.
System Boundaries Matter
Federal, immigration, state prison, and county jail systems can touch the same person in one case history. A local arrest can start at Elmore County Jail, a federal hold can move the person into USMS custody, a federal sentence can later move the person to BOP, and an immigration matter can create a separate ICE detention question. Each step has a different custodian and a different public-record route.
For that reason, the safest wording is specific: released from Elmore County Jail, released from BOP custody, no longer listed in ICE ODLS, transferred to USMS, or discharged from ADOC. Avoid using one system's release result to describe another system's custody status unless the receiving agency has been checked.
